Barack Obama is taking steps save honey bees from a mysterious die-off, ordering new research into the pesticides linked to the pollinators' collapse.


The presidential memorandum released by the White House on Friday charges a new task force with producing a strategy within 180 days to stop the alarming decline of honeybees, butterflies and other pollinators.

The memorandum also for the first time directs the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to carry out research into the role of a new class of pesticides, neonicotinoids, that have been linked with the collapse of the honeybees.

However, Obama stopped short of a ban on neonicotinoids, as the European Union and some local authorites have done.

The die-off of honeybees in many countries over the last decade has caused widespread alarm because so many of the world's food crops require pollination.

The decline has been linked to loss of habitat and disease. But there is growing evidence of a direct link between neonicotinoids, the most widely used class of insectides, and colony collapse disorder.

A Harvard study last month found exposure to two of the neonicotinoids caused honeybees to leave their hives and die.

The EU banned three of the neonicotinoids for two years pending further study on their effects late last year.

The presidential memorandum, while giving pesticides top billing among “stressors leading to species declines and colony collapse disorder”, also calls for research into poor nutrition, parasites, and loss of habitat as potential causes of the die-off.

Campaign groups welcomed the White House measures – but said they did not go far enough.

Obama should have followed the example of the EU and put restrictions on pesticide use, said Tiffany Finck-Haynes, food campaigner for Friends of the Earth US.

“He could restrict neonicotinoids today as the European Union has done and he should do that if he wants to protect our pollinators, our food systems, and our environment,” said Tiffany she said.

The Centre for Food Safety in its response said: “There is already a wealth of peer reviewed literature demonstrating the harms of pesticides to bees and other pollinators.”

The Pollinator Health Task Force established of Friday is also charged with expanding habitat for honeybees of federal land or on landscaping around government buildings.

“Future landscaping projects at all Federal facilities shall, to the maximum extent appropriate, use plants beneficial to pollinators,” it said.

Meanwhile, the US Department of Agriculture said on Friday it would spend $8m to establish new habitat for honeybees in Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

By ignoring sound science, disregarding U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service requests to alter pesticide registrations because of adverse impacts to wildlife, and rushing to get pesticides on the market, the EPA’s Office of Pesticide Programs has proven it is not an independent entity.

Humans have three types of cholinesterase: red blood cell (RBC) cholinesterase, called "true cholinesterase;" plasma cholinesterase, called "pseudocholinesterase;" and brain cholinesterase. Red blood cell cholinesterase is the same enzyme that is found in the nervous system, while plasma cholinesterase is made in the liver.
When a cholinesterase blood test is taken, two types of cholinesterase can be detected. Physicians find plasma cholinesterase readings helpful for detecting the early, acute effects of organophosphate poisoning, while red blood cell readings are useful in evaluating long-term, or chronic, exposure (8).
The cholinesterase test is a blood test used to measure the effect of exposure to certain or cholinesterase-affected insecticides. Both plasma (or serum) and red blood cell (RBC) cholinesterase should be tested.

The mainstays of medical therapy in organophosphate (OP) poisoning include atropine, pralidoxime (2-PAM), and benzodiazepines (eg, diazepam). A novel route of administration of intraosseous (bone injection gun, BIG) midazolam demonstrated rapid peak concentrations in swine compared with intravenous and intramuscular routes; the authors concluded this may play a role in quickly terminating seizures, especially in the prehospital arena.[13] Initial management must focus on adequate use of atropine. Optimizing oxygenation prior to the use of atropine is recommended to minimize the potential for dysrhythmias.

de Silva et al studied the treatment of organophosphate poisoning with atropine and 2-PAM and, later the same year, with atropine alone.[14] They found that atropine seemed to be as effective as atropine plus 2-PAM in the treatment of acute organophosphate poisoning. The controversy continued when other authors observed more respiratory complications and higher mortality rates with use of high-dose 2-PAM. Low-dose (1-2 g slow IV) 2-PAM is the current recommendation. Studies are underway to assess the role of low-dose 2-PAM. Improved survival has been shown in moderately severe OP poisoned patients who received early, continuous 2-PAM infusion compared with those who received intermittent boluses.[15]

A meta-analysis and review of the literature performed by Peter et al emphasized optimal supportive care along with discriminate use of 2-PAM, especially early in the course of treatment of moderately to severely OP poisoned patients, are the hallmarks of treatment.[16] More prospective data are required.

Because large amounts of atropine may be required for patients with organophosphate poisoning, reconstitution of powdered atropine is a viable option, especially in mass-casualty settings.[17] Recently, Rajpal et al demonstrated the clinical safety and efficacy of sublingual atropine to healthy volunteers. This may offer another route of administration for the OP poisoned patient, especially in a mass-casualty scenario.[18]

Intravenous glycopyrrolate or diphenhydramine may provide an alternative centrally acting anticholinergic agent used to treat muscarinic toxicity if atropine is unavailable or in limited supply. Additionally, Yavuz et al demonstrated reduced myocardial injury and troponin leak in fenthion-poisoned rats treated with diphenhydramine.[19]

In a single-center, randomized, single-blind study by Pajoumand et al found a benefit to magnesium therapy in addition to standard oxime and atropine therapy in reducing hospitalization days and mortality rate in patients with organophosphate poisoning.[20] The mechanisms appear to be inhibition of acetylcholine (ACh) and organophosphate antagonism. Larger randomized studies are needed to demonstrate magnesium efficacy in organophosphate (OP) poisoning.

Possible future interventions include neuroprotective agents used to prevent nerve damage and bioscavengers aimed to prevent AChE inhibition by nerve agents or organophosphate. Investigations into adjunctive and alternative therapies have mostly used animal models and have resulted in variable conclusions.[21, 22]

Not the Only One Struggling to Prove a Poisoning Done on Purpose to Oblivious People Including the Police

My son was 23 years old when he died of cyanide poisoning almost 2 years ago. Although his case is currently still an "Open Criminal Investigation" no one has been charged for Chris' death. Loosing my only son has been almost more than I can bare. It has been a battle to convince the Midlothian Texas police to investigate his death and the only reason they did not close his case and move on was because I started investigating on my own and found that his grandmother was responsible for buying the poison that killed him. A few months prior to my son's death his grandmother had made 2 threats on my son's life. She is either very mental or just very selfish, I think both. I have contacted the media in an effort to motivate the police to investigate and although they have joined my son's page and are monitoring the events that take place, much like the police, the media also seems to go where the people are. Iao River Poisoning Update ~ Dumping Something?

This album documents the poisoning of the only river on Maui, in Hawaii at Wailuku, the county capital. I have been documenting this for 5 years. I have reported this to state authorities. Sticking out my neck to file an official report. I have called every office, radio show, told the community,  made public comments to our county council...The spraying has slowed but, the white bleaching; evidence of the poisoning, continues.

Recently studying this on Google satellite map, I have found a pad set up by warehouses showing a pad that seems to be used as a dumping pad by the river.

When I first saw this bleaching my 1st thought was drug makers pouring the left overs of their products into the river to discard them.

Then I saw the county, state and HC&S (sugar plantation corporation) spraying poison...Now I see the bleaching leading up to this pad by the river out in the bush; where no one can see, and with some kind of industry going on.

1960s: Monsanto, along with chemical partner-in-crime DOW Chemical, produces dioxin-laced Agent Orange for use in the U.S.'s Vietnam invasion. The results? Over 3 million people contaminated, a half-million Vietnamese civilians dead, a half-million Vietnamese babies born with birth defects and thousands of U.S. military veterans suffering or dying from its effects to this day!

Monsanto is hauled into court again and internal memos show they knew the deadly effects of dioxin in Agent Orange when they sold it to the government. Outrageously though, Monsanto is allowed to present their own "research" that concluded dioxin was safe and posed no negative health concerns whatsoever. Satisfied, the bought and paid for courts side with Monsanto and throws the case out. Afterwards, it comes to light that Monsanto lied about the findings and their real research concluded that dioxin kills very effectively.

A later internal memo released in a 2002 trial admitted "that the evidence proving the persistence of these compounds and their universal presence as residues in the environment is beyond question ... the public and legal pressures to eliminate them to prevent global contamination are inevitable. The subject is snowballing. Where do we go from here? The alternatives: go out of business; sell the hell out of them as long as we can and do nothing else; try to stay in business; have alternative products."(3)

Altered Testicular Function, Infertility, Low Sperm Count, and Prostate or Testicular Cancer

One of the most recent studies suggests it can impact testicular function in just eight days after exposure, meaning the need for precautions and interventions is an urgent one indeed.

About 20% of young European men have sperm counts below the World Health Organization reference level of 20 m/ml, and 40% have levels below 40 m/ml. Further, semen quality deterioration and fertility issues are also escalating.

The Institute of Science in Society points to endocrine-disrupting chemical glyphosate as a culprit.

The researchers, led by Prof. Gilles-Eric Seralini from the University of Caen, France, exposed rats to a concentration of just 0.5% RoundUp, similar to the level found in water after a crop is sprayed with the herbicide. They then measured sperm function at 2, 3 and 4 months following exposure.

While there was no difference in concentration, viability, and mobility of the sperm at all three periods, there was an increase in abnormal sperm formation beginning as soon as the 2 month mark.

“Roundup was found to change gene expression in sperm cells, which could alter the balance of the sex hormones androgen and estrogen,” reports GM Watch on the study. “A negative impact on sperm quality was confirmed, raising questions about impaired sperm efficiency. The authors suggested that repeated exposures to Roundup at doses lower than those used in agriculture could damage mammalian reproduction over the long term.”

In the study overview, the authors note, “The repetition of exposures of this herbicide could alter the mammalian reproduction.” A troubling statement, but not one without precedence.

As this report from Dec. 2009 Mother Earth News shows, knowledge about the detrimental effects of RoundUp on reproduction has a history.

“The potential real-life risks from this are infertility, low sperm count, and prostate or testicular cancer. But, ‘Symptoms could be so subtle, they would be easy to overlook,’ says Theo Colborn, president of The Endocrine Disruption Exchange. ‘Timing is of critical importance. If a pregnant woman were to be exposed early in gestation, it looks like these herbicides could have an effect during the sexual differentiation stage. They really lock in on testosterone.’ The bottom line is more research is needed before we can fully understand the effects of glyphosate exposure.”

Research is beginning to catch up and show that RoundUp, its glyphosate, and its creator Monsanto, are all detrimental to our collective health. But will the studies be enough and will they be in time to prevent the large-scale harm that could occur? Now is the time to initiate change to protect all living organisms on the planet.

USDA ORGANIC is a JOKE

“Congress created the Board so that a balance of organic interests, from consumer to industry, would have an irrevocable seat at the table in defining, maintaining and enhancing organic standards. That independent voice is now seriously jeopardized,” noted Paige Tomaselli, senior attorney at the Center for Food Safety.

In response to one of several recent moves by USDA to reclassify the NOSB’s role as a purely advisory and discretionary committee, petitioners urge USDA to reverse what they consider missteps. The petition finds that to comply with organic law, USDA must immediately revise the most recent NOSB Charter to accurately reflect the mandatory non-discretionary duties and ongoing status of the NOSB as described in OFPA...

“The independence of the NOSB is the backbone of the system of organic governance that Congress set up to prevent the industry from being corrupted by undue agribusiness lobbying influence, a dynamic all too common in Washington,” stated Will Fantle, Research Director at The Cornucopia Institute. “It is questionable whether the law being debated in the 1990s would have received overwhelming organic community support if the powerful NOSB buffer, to prevent future corruption by moneyed interests, was not established.”

Public interest groups overwhelmingly condemn the “power grab” by the USDA, and contend that there is little doubt that the regulatory agency is now blatantly violating the will of Congress in regards to undermining the statutory power vested in the National Organic Standards Board.

“One of the most unique things about organic is that consumers can get involved in setting the standards behind the label. For that to remain true, we need to have a strong National Organic Standards Board process,” said Patty Lovera of Food & Water Watch.

“We have made our living from selling certified organic seed and food for over thirty years,” said Jim Gerritsen, an organic farmer in Maine and President of Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association. “NOSB integrity and fulfillment of its unique legal responsibility to represent the interests of the organic community is critical to maintaining consumer confidence in organic food and to the success of organic farming.”

At issue is the unilateral reversal of 20 years of precedent in the congressionally-mandated National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) effectively deciding the working definition of “organic” as a food production system and what, if any, synthetics are safe to include in organic food.

Corporate interests, including the industry lobby group the Organic Trade Association, have been gaming the system for years with the help of the USDA,” alleges Mark A. Kastel, Codirector of The Cornucopia Institute, an organic industry watchdog. “What has changed recently, as a result of the NOSB refusing to go along with agribusiness in approving gimmicky synthetics and nutraceuticals in organic food, is that they have now had their minions at the USDA change the rules in the middle of the game.”

In September 2013, Deputy Administrator of the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) at the USDA, Miles McEvoy, issued a controversial memorandum overturning two decades of precedents in terms of the NOSB’s self-governance.

The NOSB was created by Congress to be an industry advisory group with a number of specific statutory responsibilities, something that is unusual for a federal panel of this nature. The body now faces a loss of control over the setting its own work plans, agendas and policies.

The Organic Foods Production Act of 1990 (OFPA), specifically states that the NOSB must approve any synthetic used in organics and must re-review these materials when they ‘sunset’ every five years.

“I see a clear disconnect between the successes gained by powerful economic interests in the $30 billion plus organic industry and the family-scale farmers who get their hands dirty for a living,” said Kevin Engelbert, a New York dairy farmer and past member of the NOSB.

Engelbert’s statement references corporate interests that are focusing their lobbying prowess on the USDA’s National Organic Program and facilitating a shift to factory farm production of milk and eggs, along with an exponential increase in the importation of organic commodities from developing countries, principally China.

“We seem to be headed for an organic marketplace with two distinct branches, which will force consumers to make an extra effort to ensure that the organic brands they purchase are truly high-integrity,” Engelbert added.

The petitioners object to recent changes to the NOSB charter, renewed on May 8, 2014, that undermine the mandatory and continuing duties of the Board as established by Congress under the Organic Foods Production Act (OFPA) of 1990.

The NOSB, intended to safeguard the integrity of the organic food label, was created by Congress with independent authorities that operate outside the discretion of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Petitioners maintain that in renewing the charter under the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA), USDA mistakenly re-categorized the NOSB as a time-limited Advisory Board subject to USDA’s discretion and a narrowing of responsibilities.

Microscopes are now illegal it seems...Corporate Raiders OK Though

"On March 20, at approximately 11:00 a.m., seven uniformed officers came into my office and confiscated two microscopes. I was pretty overwhelmed and wanted to know why they took the microscopes, however they did not tell me. I stood at the doorway and said, 'This is my personal property,' and they physically shoved me out of the way. I called the local police and they came over; however, they sided with the uniformed officers. They placed a couple of slips of violations on my counter in the office and left."

The Bigelsen clinic was raided last March without notice or warning. Currently, Harvey Bigelsen is facing nine misdemeanor counts for distributing homeopathic remedies and other related offenses, including practicing medicine without a license, even though Bigelsen says he does not practice medicine. The community is rallying this Sunday to support and inform the public about the risks to alternative medicine.

The Bigelsens have been devastated by the raid, the closure of their business, subsequent foreclosure of their Nevada City home and now state and county prosecution. This grassroots fundraiser is to defray legal costs and living expenses while the Bigelsen’s clinic is closed.

By issuing this draft guidance, OCTGT is endeavoring to provide sponsors of INDs for CGT products with recommendations that can assist them in designing their early-phase clinical trials. Dr. Max Scott, professor of entomology at NC State, and his research team genetically modified lines of female Australian sheep blowflies (Lucilia cuprina) so that they required doses of tetracycline in order to live. Female blowflies that did not receive the antibiotic died in the late larval or pupal stages, before reaching adulthood. Several genetically modified lines lacking tetracycline showed 100 percent female deaths.
Scott says that the gene construct responsible for lethality in antibiotic-free diets is female-specific. Interestingly and unexpectedly, the genetically modified female larvae containing the tetracycline lethality genes also took on a crimson color due to overexpression of the linked red fluorescent protein “marker gene.” This allows scientists to tell which larvae will be females and which will be males.

“Overexpression of the gene responsible for the reliance on tetracycline also seems to overexpress this marker gene,” Scott says.

Since the females will die when not provided tetracycline in their diets, the males can be separated out in the larval stage. This is essential for a “male-only” genetic control program to reduce blowfly populations, Scott says, as fertile males would pass the lethality construct on to female offspring, which would die in the absence of tetracycline. Male larval offspring, however, would still be dangerous to livestock.
