MR. WURTELE: Good morning, Chair and Council members. My name is Chris Wurtele and I live at
38 Meha Place in Kuau, about six blocks from Mama’s Fish House. My house is mauka of Hana
Highway adjacent to HC&S’ sugar cane fields. Newly planted sugar cane was sprayed with
pesticides on two different occasions, at the very end of October and the beginning of November
of last year 2013. The first application was at around 9:30 in the morning during light trade
winds which resulted in pesticide drift. I could smell the fumes right at my house giving me a
headache. About one week later another application took place beginning at 4:00 a.m. At that
time of the early morning, dense cold air up the slopes of Haleakala slides down the volcano creating a down slope wind toward the ocean. Even though the tractor was spraying one-half
mile uphill, this downslope wind pushed the fumes right into our neighborhood. I’m sure that a
number of people in our neighborhood were asleep with their windows open. A pungent, gaslike
smell permeated our neighborhood. Our neighborhood had just been gassed. I called the
State of Hawaii, Department of Agriculture. An Environmental Health Specialist came out to my
house to test for pesticides. The test results showed exposure to dicamba, pendimethalin, 2,4-D
and atrazine. These are all very toxic to human health and to the environment in general.
Atrazine by the way was banned by the European Union in 2004 and it’s still being used here.
Atrazine has been linked with cancer, birth defects, reproductive effects, neurotoxicity, kidney
and liver damage, et cetera. It is for these reasons to just name a few that the County of Maui
needs a comprehensive ordinance regarding the application of pesticides. The State of Hawaii’s
laws are much too lax and do not adequately protect the health of people, animals, and the
environment. We need notification before pesticides are to be applied to be able to protect
ourselves. We also need buffer zones which prohibit the application of pesticides within
reasonable distances of homes, parks, and roads. I called HC&S to request notification for
everyone who lives close to their fields, and I was told they did not have the capacity to do so.
HC&S seems to have the capacity to offer notification before they burn their sugar cane fields
but not before they apply harmful pesticides.

Sad how they both died after the spraying of heart problems. Sheila died 9 days later, and Gary followed soon after.
I didn't tell how my tooth abscessed the same night and my face was huge and swollen. More pain.
THE GUY BEFORE ME WAS ACTUALLY CENSORED! BLACKED OUT IS WHAT THEY FOUND WHEN THE OVERSPRAY FROM PESTICIDE ON HIS PROPERTY WAS TESTED IN THE LAB.
MORE THEN 4 PESTICIDES,AND 1 WAS ATRAZINE.
Paparazzi I am not, but you can see Mike Victorino a County Council member's name stand out in an area that was poisoned and 2 business owners died after this spray 9 days later...
I walked through it myself unintentionally, and my mouth became so sore, and had open sores with a swollen tongue...then my tooth abscessed...The doctor thought that this was all very weird, even questioning me as to what had happened...
There MUST be written down a ledger of what, who, when and where these kind of sprays are used... to investigate?
The state pesticide misuse division is worthless...They cover up these crimes instead of taking action.
This is not some INNOCENT SPRAYING!
The vehicle they used and the tank that held the pesticide can be seen if you look to the right on the slide show of the poisoning of the I'ao River...The one with the red tank on the trailer... -->
Gary Hart and Sheila had offices and a shop about 50 yards from here on Market. This is the corner of Mill and Market.
They both died of heart conditions shortly after this spray.
Mouth, lips and tongue burning, the next morning my mouth and tongue were full of open sores. I was at the Maui Medical Night Clinic the next night. My face had ballooned and a tooth abscessed. The doctor actually asked me if something had happened to cause this... Blew me away cause she suspected this not to be normal.
This happened the 1st week of October 2013 about 9am.
The grass was already dead from being so dry...Why would they do that?
In a 20mph or more wind there was a truck with a trailer. In the trailer made especially for it, a red tank, looked like 50 gals to me. They must have weed eated the area first...
Why has this pesticide ordinance not gone anywhere?
